The first time I applied to college, I made a TON of mistakes...

I was 17 trying to figure out all these complicated forms and keep track of what seemed to be a million steps. My high school had over 2,000 students enrolled and my counselor just didn't have the time to help each of us apply to college.

I found out that a few of my peers had hired private college counselors to help them navigate the process - only to be shocked when I found out that the average private college counselor charges $200 per HOUR.

This just wasn't a realistic price for my family to pay every hour of time I needed help with the process. So I went off on my own with the help of my family and tried to figure it out. While I turned out okay, I made a LOT of mistakes along the way. If I could go back knowing what I know now, I'd do a lot differently. Here are just some of the mistakes I made:

1) I took student loans out every year because I thought it was the only way I could go to College (And now I'm in a six-figure debt to show for it)

2) I only applied to two 4-year colleges, both within an hour from my hometown

3) I didn't apply for a single scholarship

4) I never applied to be a part of any resource programs at college

The reality is, I didn't know any better because I didn't have easy access to the information that could have helped me through.

The information I needed to help me get to college felt like this heavily guarded secret that could only be unlocked if my parents could afford $200 an hour.

I didn't like that.

Applying to College can be stressful
